GALA WATERWAYS GROUP REPORT 04/03/17

On Saturday 4th March 12 volunteers cleared vegetation from the Mill Lade either side of the culvert under King Street (A72).

The work generated 5 cubic metres of prunings and weed, and has improved the appearance of both parts of the lade. 16 kg of rubbish was collected along with 3 m of blue plastic pipe.

Brian Mahler said “hand-pulling weeds is the dirtiest job we do, but we need to control the Bittersweet Nightshade that restricts the water flow in the lade and smothers nearby shrubs and trees”.

Community Councillor Claire Howden added “we are very grateful to Aldi for giving us space to park a skip, and to SBC for providing the skip and recycling the vegetation”.

The groups next workparty will be the Spring Clean on Saturday 1st April. For more information contact David Usher on 01896 753620 or davidjusher@btinternet.com
